Know your numbers and what they mean

The Health District offers heart health screenings twice a month at convenient Fort Collins locations.

Tests are free for residents of the Health District. (See if you are a resident.) Cost is $15 for all others. To be eligible, you must not have received a cholesterol test from the Health District or your health-care provider in the past 12 months unless requested by your provider.

We also hold screening clinics for groups who may lack access to these important tests, including Spanish-speaking communities, residents of permanent supportive housing, and people experiencing homelessness.

At screening clinics, we measure your cholesterol, blood pressure and your blood glucose (sugar) levels, which can detect your risk for diabetes. You can use test results to help you and your health-care provider guide your treatment if indicated.

Adults may have their cholesterol tested every one to five years, depending on risk. Ask your provider for recommendations.

About the test

We use accurate, state-of-the-art equipment requiring only a simple finger stick for our blood test. Cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure results are available within 20 minutes. Cholesterol results include total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides.

A registered nurse will explain your heart health screening results and offer health information. Discussion with the nurse focuses on heart-disease risk and steps for leading a heart-healthy life.

An 8-hour fast is required for best results with our cholesterol blood test. Medications are permitted. Drinking water is encouraged.

Appointments are required; call 970-224-5209

Testing days and locations

Testing clinics are held on select Wednesdays of each month, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m., unless otherwise noted.
